When it comes to art, we’re used to seeing the final product on a gallery wall or a theater’s stage. Few get to witness the fascinating process that takes place behind the scenes, in the workshops where sets are created and costumes sewn or the studios where paints are chosen and canvases primed. Behind the Scenes introduces us to UBCFA artists, experts and craftspeople who take us backstage for a fascinating glimpse at how art comes to life.
The UB Center for the Arts welcomes student and faculty artists at the University at Buffalo to introduce their latest work and take us through their creative process—from inspiration to exhibition. UB Artist Spotlights showcase the innovation, passion, activism and diversity of this remarkable generation of artists.
On any given day, the UBCFA is a buzzing hive of artistic activity. Walk through our gorgeous atrium and you’re likely to hear musicians practicing their latest work, sit in on a theater rehearsal or spot one of our student artists getting ready for their next dance class. Art in the Atrium captures these impromptu performances for all to enjoy.
In this series, UBCFA artists, experts and craftspeople teach viewer how to perform the techniques that bring art to life. You’ll find tutorials that focus on set and costume design, stage lighting, prop construction, gallery hanging, ankle wrapping (for dance), and more.
